Detroit's Population Crashes

This article does back-flips, somersaults, the hokey-pokey and a line-dance, but  it doesn't address why people are fleeing Detroit. I'm going to give it to you straight - unlike most of the media out there. The Black African-American population love them some crime! And who better to practise this craft on than their fellow citizens. As a result, 25% of the population has fled in the past decade. Not to worry though - the AAs are stalking the Whites to their new suburbs, and as a result the crime rate has started to increase there as well. Another reason for the demise of Detroit is the union movement, which is solely responsible for destroying the very auto-industry that brought Detroit riches and recognition world-wide. The unions demanded increased wages and wonderful perks for their workers, making the cars produced uncompetitive in price. Yeah - that's what unions do folks - they just look out for you, their little worker bee (as long as you pay them your fees). Of course we shouldn't forget to mention another common reason why mainly AA run cities die: the high taxes the city demands to support more and more 'entitlements' and larger pay and benefits packages for public employees. Just see how the Mayor, Mr Bing, states in the article below that he has to magically produce another 40 000 people so that they can get more free money from the Federal government. Detroit is a poster case for why heaping entitlement on entitlement does not work - if you build up a constituency of the entitled, you must raise taxes to pay for the handouts. Businesses and individuals who can afford to (i.e. productive citizens) leave town, thus further eroding the tax base, forcing more tax increases, and cuts in services. It's vicious circle, and we are now seeing not only cities, but states, and the entire USA circling the drain. This is the inevitable consequence when you subsidise failure by punishing success.

DETROIT—The population of Detroit has fallen back 100 years.

The flight of middle-class African-Americans to the suburbs fueled an exodus that cut Detroit's population 25% in the past decade to 713,777, according to Census Bureau data released Tuesday. That's the city's lowest population level since the 1910 census, when automobile mass production was making Detroit Detroit.

The decline, the fastest in city history, shocked local officials, who had expected a number closer to 800,000. Mayor Dave Bing said the city would seek a recount.

"If we could go out and identify another 40,000 people that were missed, and it brings us over the threshold of 750,000, that would make a difference from what we can get from the federal and state government," Mr. Bing said at a news conference Tuesday.

In all, the city lost more than 237,000 residents, including 185,000 blacks and about 41,000 whites. The Hispanic population ticked up by 1,500. Meanwhile, the black population in neighboring Macomb County more than tripled to 72,723, constituting 8.6% of the county's population in 2010, compared with 2.7% a decade earlier. Oakland County's African-American population rose 36% to 164,078.

Detroit's population has fallen steadily since the heyday of the auto industry in the 1950s, when it peaked around two million, but the declines have accelerated in recent years as manufacturing jobs have disappeared and the mortgage crisis has devastated even stable, middle-class neighborhoods. The number of vacant housing units doubled in the past decade to nearly 80,000, more than one-fifth of the city's housing stock, the Census Bureau reported.
